Demise of 78 Records Store

It was sadly reported in this morning's "West Australian" that Perth's legendary record store "78 Records" is set to close it's doors on March 3rd. The impact of streaming services and the economic conditions at this time being the reasons given for the closure. Time to reflect on the outlets humble beginnings in Forrest Place in 1971 when they offered an overseas mail ordering service for collectors and built a huge blues section and other specialist vinyl sections for a growing number of enthusiasts. We extend to all at 78's our best wishes for the future.

I am not surprised it has happened. The last time I was in there last September it seemed as if cd's were virtually non existant and even tho they were selling used vinyl and I think some brand new vinyl it seemed to come too late. Most of the stores in perth are using a whole lot of strategies including selling turntables either new or used as well as selling on ebay or discogs.Even with a resurgence of vinyl it still is tough market for brick and mortar stores.

Must admit I haven't been there since they were near His Majesty's, which must be a couple of locations ago. I too remember traipsing up the stairs in Forrest Place in the early 70's!
I second J.S.'s sentiment about wishing the staff all the best for the future.
